Tips for Traveling by Air with Your Children

Going on vacation with your children can be a rough experience when you’re in the car for a long period of time. The good thing about it is you have the ability to stop when you need to. You can also bring headphones, DVD players, books, and other items to keep them occupied during the trip.

When you’re traveling by air with your children it can be hard due to the inability to stop on a dime to get out and stretch. Depending on the age of your children you may have other issues as well. There seems to be a short age where they do fine and then a long stretch where they don’t before you hit the age where they will do well again.

The best thing you can do is be prepared for every situation you can imagine. Of course you’ll have the situation you’re not prepared for that will creep up on you, but if you’re prepared for everything else, hopefully it will work out for you.

One thing you can do to when you’re traveling by air with your children is to create an itinerary that works for the age of your children. The older the children are, the better they handle travel time. So if you have the ability see if it’s possible to have about a two hour layover between flights. This will give your children the ability stretch out and move around before they have to get on the plane again. You may also have the ability to do a sit down meal and that may help make matters just a little better.

For the older children headphones, DVD’s, games, and books are a good way to keep them busy during the flight. For the babies, a few favorite toys, a sucker or some other food item they can suck, and several bottles with milk and juice in them will help. Keeping your baby awake for as long as possible may help them take a nap during the flight. For the toddlers and younger children you’ll need to consider DVD’s, music, or color books to keep them occupied. For the toddlers on up you might also consider a laptop computer. You won’t have the internet while you’re in the air, but the games on the computer will help keep them busy for hours.

Traveling by air with your children can be trying, but the time you’ll save in the car will be well worth it. Prepare in advance and you’ll have a better flight. Keeping the children occupied with activities and bringing snacks will make things a little better as well.
