How to help your Children Exercise

So many children today are into video games, watching TV, and being lazy. This is not good for their health, so it’s important we do what we can to help our children see how important exercise is and how fun and easy it can be.

Children of all ages need to exercise. The younger the child, the easier it is because they haven’t been subjected to video games, but it might be difficult because of the TV. Sometimes, when we’re so busy we find ourselves placing the smaller children in front of the TV to keep them occupied while we finish what we’re working on. While that’s a good thing at the time, it’s not so good when they do it all the time.

Helping your children exercise can be just as good for them as it is for you. Research may be needed if you can’t find anything they enjoy. Here are a few things you can consider, but of course these depend on the age of your child, their current health, their abilities, and your neighborhood.

* Ride bicycles
* Walk around the neighborhood
* Play Wii Fit
* Exercise program
* Go to the Mall and walk around
* Join a gym or fitness center

If it’s at all possible, these should be done with the supervision of an adult. You don’t want your child to overdo it and get hurt, so it’s better to be supervised. Again, depending on the age, you may need to be in the same room, but if your children are older, being in the same house will work.

It’s important you talk to your child about the risks of exercise and how they can get hurt if they do things not approved by you. While explaining the risks, you also need to discuss the importance of working out. Tell them the healthy reasons and also tell them how fun it is.

One thing you need to do is make sure you consult your doctor if your child has any medical or health related issues. There might be special things they need or should do to prevent injury or some other problem.

Exercise is good for people of all ages. Most adults know the importance of it, but the children might now. When you show them how to exercise correctly, they won’t mind doing it. They see the advantages after a few days and they’ll, more than likely, want to continue. Make sure you encourage them as often as you can.

Christmas lights and more

Tis the season for Christmas lights and family pictures. Christmas is one of my favorite times of year. I love looking at the Christmas lights and we have always taken Christmas pictures of the kids.

Christmas lights are so fun to look at because people can do so many neat things with them. Some people set their lights to music while others may create words with their lights. I love the look of a tree with snow on it as well as lights that look like ice melting. Here are some pictures Kevin took of the lights on the trees in the park across the street from the hospital.

Christmas pictures of the kids started when Chris and Shai were just 10 months old. Some of the pictures were taken easily while others were a struggle to get. But that happens no matter what time of year it is and the reason for the pictures. Here are some pictures of the kids this year.

How to Handle a Child with Special Needs in the Public Schools

A child with special needs can be hard to deal with on a daily basis. Routines don’t always work and that can be trying on a special needs child. Behavior, large groups of people, and learning disabilities can all hinder a special needs child. Adding public school classrooms can make things even worse yet.

Almost all special needs children have an Individualized Education Program (IEP). This will help everyone that deals with your child to have a better understanding of the problems and goals your child has for school. The IEP’s are created with the parents, teachers, and principal so it’s important you give input and ask questions regarding the goals or anything that may come to mind.

There are times when the school may fall short of your expectations when it comes to your child’s IEP. If this happens, you need to confront the school, but this may feel like the most difficult thing in the world to do. If this happens, you need to consider hiring a parent-child advocate. They’re there to help you get what your child needs and sometimes it’s the only way to make it happen.

You need to remember this is your child and it’s up to you as to how things are done. There are times when you must stand your ground and ensure things are happening in the correct way. This may mean requesting a new teacher and if that’s the case, don’t feel bad because your child’s education is the most important thing.

As your child gets older, you may find it’s more difficult to get the help you need for your child. That doesn’t mean your child doesn’t need the IEP anymore. It just means it may be a bit tricky to get it done and have the teachers stick to the program set in place with the goals, but it is possible.

When your child is in middle school or high school, it completely changes everything. Instead of having one teacher, they’ll have seven to eight teachers. This makes it a bit more difficult when it comes to the IEP and the help your child needs. The best thing to do is ask that all teachers come to the meeting and hold it as soon after school starts as possible. This will give the teachers the ability to prepare for the needs of your child. You need to have all teachers attend including elective teachers because they’ll need to make sure they use the tips to help your child learn and succeed in their class.

Having a special needs child can be difficult, but when you have the right tools, they can have a successful school career and not struggle. Make sure you stay in contact with the teachers and check the grades often. If your child’s grades start to slip you need to get in contact with that teacher immediately. If you let it go too long, it may be nearly impossible for them to catch up and have a passing grade. Also make sure the teachers know they can contact you at any time if they feel there is a problem. When you have all of these things in place your child will have the best school years possible.

The School Dance

Last night was our youngest son’s first middle school dance. He has been looking forward to this dance since the middle of October. He was really nervous about the dance because his little girlfriend would be there.

Needless to say it turned out really good. They had a lot of fun and they both were glad they went. Here are some pictures for you to see. The first two are Josh after he was ready to go and the last one is of Josh and his girlfriend Harleigh.

Josh, Dad and I are very proud of you for going to the dance and having a good time!

Holiday Gift Giving the Frugal Way

In my family, we have 50+ members and that makes it very difficult when it comes to Christmas shopping. Since I can remember we’ve drawn names so we only purchase one present per person. We have dollar limits set in place so we all spend the same amount of money. It’s the only way we can make it work.

When you’re trying to keep your frugal ways Christmas can put a damper on that at times. So using the gift exchange idea will slim down your purchases which in return helps you save money. Set a limit of $25 for the adults and $15 for the kids and that will help you save even more money.

You need to remember that Christmas is not about the number of gifts or the price spent it’s the thought that counts the most. You should consider purchasing gifts online through eBay since they usually have better deals than what you may find in the stores and that will help you get more for your money.

The best thing you can do is go into the store with your list in hand and have your mind set to one item and don’t go over. Just remember you need to stick by the amount of money you set in place so others don’t feel bad if you spend more than they did.

Frugal living is possible during the Christmas season when you set your mind to it and find ways that make it work. It may take a little bit of time, but you can do it.

How to Help Your Child when She’s Being Bullied

Bullies are all over the world. They’re in every city and every classroom which makes them hard to avoid at times. One thing you need to do is make sure you teach your child that bullying is wrong and they should never do it. While you can do that all you want, it doesn’t help them when someone bullies them.

So the best thing you can do is make sure your child knows she can talk to you about anything and everything. No matter how bad they feel the situation is, they need to make sure they have someone to talk to and that’s where you come into play.

There are a couple of ways you can help your child deal with a bully. One may be easy and one not so easy, so it’s a good idea to sit down with your child and decide how they want the situation to be handled.

One way to deal with a bullying situation is to let your child handle it on their own. This way may be both easier and more difficult on you, but if this is the way your child wants then you need to at least let them try to make it work. Depending on their age, having their parents get involved may do more harm than good.

If they try to deal with the situation on their own, you can encourage them to use one of these two methods to deal with it. Talking to a principal or teacher is one way to handle this type of situation. If they have a teacher or someone else at the school they trust, it may be easier for them to feel comfortable asking for help.

If they don’t want to talk to someone another option is to handle the situation on their own. With this option, you need to discuss with your child so they have the understanding that fighting is not the way to go. It’s possible they may be so angry and frustrated that they may feel fighting is the only way to handle it, but that can be dangerous or could cause problems in school.

The last option is for you to talk to the principal yourself or with your child. When this option is chosen, you need to know that it’s possible it will be resolved with the help of the principal, but it’s also possible the person doing the bullying may decide to take it one step further and harass your child even more. If the school handles the situation correctly, the last item shouldn’t happen.

Children tend to keep things bottled up inside and when bullying happens they may not want to tell anyone because they’re embarrassed about it. When you communicate with your child and encourage them to talk to you about things they’re going through, they may feel at ease about discussing this problem with you. When you use one of the three techniques you should be able to get the bullying situation under control and resolved quickly.

How to Handle a Bullying Situation

No matter how hard we try, there are certain situations that we can’t prevent from happening. One of those situations is bullying. There are kids out there that don’t care about others and it doesn’t seem to bother them when they hurt them. It’s unfortunate, but true.

There is always a reason why a child bully’s another, but they don’t usually get the help needed to stop it from happening. Since they don’t get the help, they continue to bully not even thinking about the feelings of others.

Bullying comes in many different forms and the reasons may surprise you. Usually a child is bullied because of the way they look or the way they dress. They may also do this to those that act differently either mentally or physically.

If your child or someone you care about is being bullied you’ll need to handle it in a calm manner, but you need to act quickly. Most times a child is embarrassed that it’s happening so you may find out after it’s been going on for some time. Here are a few things you need to do after you find out what is going on with your child.

The first thing you need to do is comfort your child. Assure them it’s ok and you’re going to handle everything and they’re going to be ok. Making sure they’re ok is important because they probably don’t trust anyone due to the things that are happening.

The next thing is to contact either the school or parents depending on where and when the bullying occurred. Most times it happens at school, so it’s important that you contact the principal or campus security person to get help. One thing to remember is you can get yourself into trouble if you don’t handle this correctly and taking matters into your own hands is a way to make that happen.

When you discuss the problem with the school it’s important to have all of the facts in mind before you go in. It’s also a good idea to have your child come with you when you go in to discuss the problem. The person you talk to may need questions answered that you may not have thought of and only they have the answers.

Once the appropriate people have been notified it’s time for you to go back and help your child through this situation. It will be hard for them to trust anyone, but you need to remind them it’s important they don’t try to take matters into their own hands. If they feel after a day or two that the school is not handling it in correctly, you need to encourage them to come to you or someone at the school with the details that have occurred since you talked to others.

While this is a hard situation for you to handle, it’s even harder for your child. Comforting her is one way of helping the situation become a little easier, but you need to realize this will take time. Just make sure the situation is resolved and continue to ask your child about the problem and ask if they have questions. Helping them get through it is the key to overcoming the situation and moving on in a positive and healthy matter.

Two Tips for Making Family Meal Happen Easier

We are all busy, but parents with children that are in extracurricular activities may be even busier than the people that don’t have that. We seem to be running all the time. If we’re not running one child to an event we’re running the other one.

My boys are very busy with sports and school functions. We barely have time to eat together as a family. So we must plan carefully so the family meals are able to happen. There are several ways to make this work, but you must have the right supplies and you must be willing to work to make it happen.

My two parenting tips for this work center around family meals.

1. Preparing your meals in advance

There are two ways to make this step happen. One thing you can do is plan your meals for the week. Sit down and decide what you’re going to have and then prepare a grocery list that contains everything you’ll need to make those meals. When you have everything you need you won’t have to make trips to the grocery store and you won’t have to order out.

The other option is to use freezer cooking. Freezer cooking gives you the ability to make meals quickly and easily. You take the time each weekend or one day a week and you cook everything you’ll need for your meals. Once that’s done everything goes in the freezer. Each day you pull the meals and you’re ready to eat in a short about of time. The Hillbilly Housewife offers a great ebook with all the information needed to start freezer cooking right away. Click here to purchase your copy through my affiliate link.

2. Crockpot Meals

If you’re not into freezer cooking another option is to use your crockpot. Most stores like Walmart and Target offer large crockpots that are big enough for a large meal for the entire family. You’ll find meals in a bag at your local grocery store as well. Usually these meals are ready to go so all you have to do is place the contents of the bag in your crockpot and possibly place water in the crockpot to go with it.

There are a number of Crockpot Cookbooks you can purchase that will give you all sorts of meals you can make. They offer breakfast, lunch, dinner, appetizers, desserts, and just about anything else you can think of so they are very valuable when you want to use this option.

The Hillbilly Housewife offers a crockpot cookbook that makes these types of meals easy to do. She gives you everything except the food when it comes to this cookbook. Click here to get your copy of the Crockpot Cooking Made Simple ebook through my affiliate link.

Ok so now you have two suggestions to consider when you want to make sure you are able to have family meals each night. Both of these options work well, but you’ll need to decide which one will work best for you and then continue to use it regularly. Family meal time is very important and will help your kids to stay out of trouble. So make sure you do it regularly and often.
